Workshop Description

This workshop presents a mix of musical and technical hints, tips and ideas relating to the "play along" software known as Band In A Box. Mr. Lewis, the presenter of this workshop, has over fifteen years of experience using the Band In A Box software for everything from practicing to composing new tunes. This workshop will focus on the software's flexibility (as compared to other play along formats).

This workshop comes with a free disk with examples and supporting material. You will also receive free handout literature which will free you from the need of taking notes and give you the opportunity to focus completely on the presentation.

Topics Covered Include:

Keys
One of the strengths of Band In A Box is that you can change the key so easily. This is useful in a variety of ways, not all of them are obvious.

Tempo
In some ways, Band In A Box is like a high tech, musical metronome. We will discuss ways to use this flexibility in practice.

Substitute and Alternate Changes
One of the problems with traditional play-alongs is their chord choices. In this workshop, we will discuss not only the technical side of entering chords into the software, but also the reasoning, tradition and logic behind chord choices. Other valuable resources will be mentioned in the handout literature.

Other Applicable Practice Techniques
There is a wide variety of ways to use Band In A Box for practicing. We will discuss techniques such as "Bridge Building", "Harmonic Augmentation" and "Focused Minimalism". These and many other practice techniques combine the best of play-along resources and traditional practice techniques.

Getting Organized
After a while you will begin to grow a collection of personalized tunes sometimes numbering in the hundreds. We will discuss the best ways to organize these tunes to facilitate more efficient practice habits. This part of the workshop will cover everything from naming conventions to practice rotations. Sample forms will be included on the disk which will help you keep all of your tunes under your belt for as long as you continue to practice.
