Workshop Description
The Trumpet All-State Prep workshops are
from a series of workshops spread out over the year which are aimed at
increasing the trumpet student's musical maturity. We believe that it is
musical maturity which wins auditions. When high school students
sound like a college students, it puts them in a different league from
everyone else.
This concept has helped Eddie Lewis'
students win auditions for over twenty years now, including the Texas
All-State band. Mr. Lewis made the Texas All-State band himself in 1981
and 1982. His students have been making All-State since 1984. He has
served as a judge for many All-Region auditions and has an insider's view
of the process.
This first workshop, "Covering All
The Bases", focuses on all the things the student should be
focusing on and practicing over the summer months, before the All-State
audition music is announced. It is strategically placed in the last half
of May to give the students the right information at the right time.
Most students don't know it, but summer is
a crucial time in the All-State preparation process. Most think that you
don't need to begin preparing for All-State until the music is announced.
After all, how do you practice something you haven't even seen yet? Right?
WRONG!!! Playing the music is only half of what you are judged on. Those
things which are most important MUST be practiced months if not years in
advance.
"Covering All The Bases"
will get you started in the right direction. Use your summer months
wisely, work on the musical objectives Mr. Lewis gives you in this
workshop, and you will do far better than those who don't.
This is the first of six All-State Prep
workshops. The second workshop is in mid summer. In it we will be
discussing various practice techniques. Those techniques will be used
later on the actual music when it is released. The third is a couple weeks
after the music is announced. That's when we will look at efficient
strategies for learning the music, making plans and setting short term
goals. There will be two workshops early in the fall semester and a final
workshop a week before the All-Region band auditions. The last workshop
will address the actual audition process with mock auditions and lots of
inside information.
