What is this camp all about?
Let's start with what this camp is not about. This
camp is not a jazz band camp and should not be confused with a jazz band
camp. In a jazz band camp, the emphasis is placed on ensemble performance.
In this camp, which is a jazz IMPROVIZATION camp, the emphasis is placed on improvisation.
Yes, your child will learn about jazz, your child will play some jazz,
but mostly your promising young musician will focus on learning to
improvise. The camp is geared towards young musicians who
have a basic competence on their instrument and want to learn how to improvise.
(Generally, we recommend that the student have at least 2 years of
experience on their instrument of choice. Please note that this is
a recommendation only.
Contact us to discuss the matter if you are not sure whether your
child will benefit from this camp.)
The camp will be presented by one of Houston's best
known jazz trumpeters, who has been teaching jazz for almost 30 years.
Eddie Lewis has taught jazz improvisation at the
High School for
Performing and Visual Arts, at various summer jazz camps, at other Consort
Immanuel workshops, and in private lessons. He is not only an experienced
jazz musician himself, but also an accomplished jazz teacher and author of
a number of music books. Lewis will work with the students in what he calls the "Five Areas of
Study". His approach is hands-on and encourages active participation
throughout the camp, with plenty of written music
and exercises for the students to take home and practice once the camp
ends. Many
approaches to jazz improvisation are stifling and intimidating,
discouraging young musicians from even trying to improvise. This camp
is different, with every effort made to take the intimidation element out
of the activities. At this camp, students will improvise within the first hour,
and will sound good doing it. Improvisation is not difficult, and this
camp will demonstrate this. Your child can be improvising on a basic
level by the end of the first day. Making the improvised music sound like jazz is the
real challenge. So students are not overwhelmed by this challenge, the
camp will begin with basic improvisation
and slowly add the jazz material as the camp progresses. This way,
the students develop improvisation skills that gradually grow into
jazz improvisation skills. If
you are not sure whether your child has the required musical
competence to benefit from this camp, feel free to
contact us and discuss your child's background in music.
Remember that this is a jazz improvisation camp, so any
jazz-appropriate instrumentation can be accommodated.
